Progressive Cutting Test

The Katsu features a Forge Folded blade with a traditional shinogi-zukuri geometry. The design of the Katana has been inspired by the swords of the Japanese Warring States period. Swords from this period were designed to cut through armor and thus needed to have a strong, reinforced edge. Adding Niku was the solution to the blades being able to stand up to armor without breaking.

This blade features medium Niku, allowing for heavier and harder cutting. The Niku makes the blade thicker so the cuts will not be as swift and clean as a light cutter, but the the Ha will keep its cutting edge longer. The sword is appropriate for heavy Tameshigiri with tatami and bamboo.
Features
  • Blade: The blade of the sword has been forge folded with 1065 carbon steel and a 1040 carbon steel core. The blade features 4,000 layers of steel. The grain pattern is Ayasugi-hada at the Shinogiji with Itame-hada along the Ji and inside the hamon. The hamon has been authentically created with a Gunome pattern. The Nioi line of the hamon is very crisp with small Nie crystals running along the entire hamon. It has medium niku, which makes it a great moderate-to-heavy target cutter for tameshigiri.
  • The tip of the blade features a geometric Kissaki (medium length) with a Kaeri-Asashi temper line.
  • The blade is full tang and very sharp.
  • Saya: Gold dust has been added to the maroon finish of the Saya and then sealed with a clear lacquer finish.
  • Tsuka: The Tsuba is blackened iron with two cut out flowers painted golden. The Fuchi and Kashira are also blackened iron. The Tsuka features double pinned Mekugi and copper Menuki. The Tsuka also features genuine Same (ray skin) and tan chemical fiber Ito Tsukamaki.

If it wasn't pretty, I would be pissed. December 2, 2011

The sword is beautiful, that is for sure. A couple things though: The sword is far from razor sharp, in fact I have kitchen knives that are sharper than this sword.

The sword is far heavier than expected, and is akward to swing. Sword' N' Armory refuses to give out the forge name, which is strange, because if they were proud of it they would have given it away for sure.

Shipping took forever as-well. They took 2 extra days just "prepairing" the sword. When I got it and unshiethed it, it was covered in shards of metal (Like a grinder would produce) and the blade was covered in thick oil. This is usually a good thing, except the oil was from the kit that comes with the sword, and the bottle of oil was empty as they had used it.

Overall I would not buy a Munetoshi sword again.

munetoshi katsu October 22, 2011
Reviewer: Anonymous Person from el paso, TX United States
i had my doubts about it by looking at the pictures, but when it arrived it was outstanding. The pictures don’t do justice to the blade at all. The blade was perfect but the only thing wrong was the guard, the golden flowers had green rust but nothing that I really cared about as the reason for my purchase was the blade. It cuts good, it is well balanced, an light even though it doesn’t have a blood grove. The Damascus patter looks great as well as the hamon line. The fittings are great and there is no play In them. All around a great katana for the price. Originally I had ordered a different katana but they had run out before they send it to my so I contacted them to see what happened, and by the way great customer service, really an outstanding customer service.  They told me I could get a refund or chose another blade and I ended up choosing the katsu and I haven’t regret it  at all. Best katana for 300 bucks.

excellent sword October 20, 2011
Reviewer: Tom Schneider from Worms, Rheinland-Pfalz Germany
I recieved the sword a few days ago and was already able to test it a bit.

For the price, it is quite adequate and a pretty nice cutter with a pleasurable amount of niku. The visibility of the folding-pattern or 'hada', though, is not really visible on my sword. This may vary, cause I've seen and accomplished the visibility of hada in dependance to acid-etching of the blade (disregarding traditional polishing methods).

Anyway, its a really nice sword with simple but tight and good fittings and a nice overall appearance.

Good Sword August 10, 2011
Reviewer: Vanessa Wagner from Collingwood, ON Canada
Sword arrived quickly, reasonably priced, beautiful blade, better balanced and better cut than my kaze. The pictures don't do it justice. Only complaint was the blade edge had a couple minor "chips" and black possibly rust starting. Took care of it with some emery paper and all is well. Will purchase another Munetoshi blade in the future.
