The Jolly Roger is the flag of the Pirates and the term 'Jolly Roger' goes back to at least 1724. However, the term was already a generic term for the black flag, so the term is more than likely from a much older date. There are several theories concerning the origin of the term. Some theories suggest that the term is English in origin, coming from the term rogue.

Another theory suggests that the name was adopted from the French term "Joli Rouge", or red flag. In this case the correlation between the two flags is the meaning of death that both flags carried. In either case the Jolly Roger has become one the early examples of psychological warfare on the high seas. Typically just the appearance of the Jolly Roger was enough for most sailors to surrender their vessels.
