Masters of Fire 15/10/2005 - 15/1/2006
International Exhibition of Contemporary Blade smiths

This is the winner of the Masters of Fire Contemporary Blade Smiths Competition. Top blade smiths from all over the world entered this competition, the blades varied as much as the countries that they were from. However, it was this replica of the Emperor Wu of the Han Dynasty that won.

Every aspect of this sword has been expertly crafted by one of the best blade smiths in the world. The blade has been layered with steel and iron then folded to create 8,000 layers. Styled in the Ba Hau method, the blade has eight sides. This alone could only be done by an expert smith (you might see knock offs of this sword but these will not have eight sides). In the tradition of Longquan the blade has been quenched in the legendary spring of Longquan, or the dragon spring.

The fittings of the sword are bronze, cast in the lost wax method. Each fitting is the same as the Emperor's sword, transcending through time 2,162 years. The cord wraps are dark brown silk and the scabbard is ancient Sandalwood.

There are only four of these sword in the world (including the Masters of Fire winner in Macao). This is not a replica of history, this is a piece of history.

The sword includes a Certificate of Authenticity, a serial number, official stamp of Chris Zhou, and Chris Zhou's signature.

Chris Zhou only made 4 of these swords himself, including the one in the museum and we only have one piece. If you are a serious sword collector, this sword is the one you must have.

Features
  • Blade: The blade was constructed in the Qiangang (or inserted steel) method. The high carbon steel edge forms a core with medium carbon steel sandwiching it. These pieces are known as Cheeks. The Cheeks are composed of altering layers of iron and steel, this sword has 8,000 layers. These layers create a distinct pattern on the surface of the blade. The result of this forging method is similar to a Japanese Katana where the sword that is exceptionally hard yet still flexible.
  • After the construction of the layers and the core, the sword was tempered and quenched in the dragon spring water of Longquan. It was then hammered into the desired length and shape. The tempering of the blade gives the sword the ability to retain a 45 HRC on the body of the blade and a 56 HRC on the edges. The difference in the HRC hardness allows the blade to be versatile and have no worry of losing its edge or shattering.
  • The blade has been shaped in Ba Hua style (or is eight sided). This is an incredibly difficult process of crafting a blade with 1,000s of layers while simultaneously creating eight sides. You will see knock offs from this sword, but you will not see another sword with eight sides on it. It is extremly difficult this type of blade and thus requires a master smith.
  • This sword was not only expertly laminated and constructed but is also straighter than even a machine can make. The precision of the sword is the result of absolutely meticulous honing and an expert eye.
  • The final steps of the swords construction were polishing and sharpening. Both of these are an art in itself. The polishing of the sword brings out the best features in the blade and the grain pattern, as well as giving the sword its mirror finish. Varying stones are used to polish the sword and experience is required to know when and which stone to use. This process alon takes days to complete.
  • The sword was then hand sharpened. Similar to polishing this is also an art form. A typical a sword sharpener will charge $25 for each inch sharpened. It takes days to sharpen the whole sword.
  • Scabbard: The scabbard is ancient Sandalwood constructed with a double layer structure. The design is masterfully done with the wood contouring to the shape of the sword. The pommel of the scabbard is bronze with a dragon face on each side and a Chinese square pattern on the bottom. A brown silk wrap is tied around the upper half of the sword with a bronze carrying clip featuring two dragons in bold relief. The scabbard throat has been seamlessly fitted to the guard.
  • The bronze fittings on the scabbard, as well as all of the fittings, on the sword were created in the lost wax method. This method of casting is ancient and yet has remained almost unchanged in the present day, a good testament to the effectiveness of this casting. The use of the lost wax method allows for a greater level of detail but requires one skilled in sculpturing and casting. It is difficult to compare this level of intricate design or beauty to other swords, which is probably why this sword won the Masters of Fire Sword Making contest.
  • Guard: The Guard, and the rest of the sword, is a replica of the actual sword used by the Emperor Wu of the Han Dynasty in 156 BC. The scroll work is historically one of the most beautiful in Chinese history, the style named after this dynasty. The scroll work and cut out design is reminiscent of the simplistic beauty and prestige of the Han Dynasty. The guard is a cut out design with a hollow that houses the beginning of the blade and cut out dragons on each side.
  • Handle: The handle is ancient Sandalwood over the tang of the sword, tapering down from the pommel to the blade. A dark brown silk cord is wrapped over the length of the handle with a criss cross at the bottom and thick wind at the top. The pommel of the sword is solid brass with three dragons entwined in deep relief. The center of the dragons is so expertly cast that it appears that the dragons are floating over the brass of the pommel.
