Description Item Specs

The Edo period was marked by the stability of Japan brought by the Tokugawa government. The Samurai's role from warriors to peace keepers further progressed in this period. Although there was still conflict during the 200 years of the period, it was relatively calm in comparison to the warring states of the previous period. As the Samurai became more cultured their swords became more decorative and sword making became more of an art form. Some of the most beautiful swords came from this era.

This is the Damascus Steel edition of the late Edo Period Reproduction Katana, the sword's name is Spring Dragon. The fittings of sword are the same as its predecessor, but the blade has been upgraded to a Damascus-Look Blade. With the intricate and elegant beauty of the tsuba, fuchi, and kashira and the addition of the watermarked blade this sword is by far the best reproduction we have ever seen from the late Edo period. The katana can be used functionally, but is definitely able to be a decorative as well. This katana is perfect for serious collectors or beginning collectors.
Features
  • Blade: The blade of the sword is hand made from High Carbon Steel by forge folding, creating a look similar to the Damascus style. The blade is full tang with a bohi, a medium kissaki, and comes razor sharp.
  • Saya (Scabbard): The Saya of the sword is wooden with a black glossy finish. A black cotton Sageo is wrapped around the sword with a wooden and copper Kurigata.
  • Tsuba (Guard): The habaki is one piece brass construction. The seppas are copper. The Tsuba is extraordinary with a delicate elegance and pains taking attention to detail. A dragon wraps around the tsuba in a cut out style surrounded by silver orchids. The dragon is detailed down to each individual scale and claw. A tsuba also features a cut out kozuka.
  • Tsuka (Handle): The fuchi is as beautiful as the tsuba with another dragon surrounded by orchids. The dragon is inlaid copper and the orchids inlaid zinc. The tsuka is hardwood wrapped with authentic same and black cotton ito. Copper menuki are found on each side of the tsuka in the likeness of orchids. The tang is secured by two mekugi. The kashira are two rearing dragon heads fighting for the sphere of wisdom. The kashira is a masterpiece of its own accord.

Not Razor Sharp at all August 15, 2011
Reviewer: Jacob Rodriguez from Sacramento, CA United States
First of all, the sword isn't any sharper than a $50 display sword I bought in high school.  Also, this handmade sword is not tempered with a hamon so cutting is probably out of the question.

Upon dis-assembly, I found peculiar "additions".  First, the tsuka was very hard to remove because the manufacturer stuck a plastic shim along the tang.  The habaki (blade collar) also had a piece of wood glued under it.  the rest of the fittings were also glued together.  I even had to file the tang down a bit so the tsuba would slide down the tang.  After some filing I removed most of the pesky glue. Finally, both mekugi were inserted in the tsuka in one direction instead of opposite directions which is not traditional design.

Positive notes.  It's pretty.  The tang nearly runs the entire length of the tsuka which make for a well balanced sword.    The bo-hi makes a beautiful sound with each strike.  This is a adequate sword for a beginner learning Iaido.
