The Butterfly Sword is the essential weapon of Wing Chung, Lau Gar and Hung Gar. The double swords first made their appearance in the southern China but eventually spread to northern China. The short swords are only the length of a forearm, but this small size allowed the swords to be utilized to deadly effect in close quarters.

Traditionally only the upper half of the blades were sharpened. This allowed for the lower half of the blade to used for blocking and non fatal strikes. The full wrap guard protects the hands and allows the sword to be used similar to brass knuckles.
