Norse dwarves (dvergar) are the earliest source for our understanding of original dwarves. These dwarves had characteristics closer to modern day vampires with very pale skin, black hair, a fatal reaction to sunlight and close association with death. However, the Norse dwarf quickly evolved into a mystical creature of short stature with a magical skill in metallurgy. By the Middle Ages the dwarf had not only shrunken in stature but was also comical and wise.
