In the Koto Period the Samurai were the front line of attack. From horse back they used their swords to cut the enemy to pieces. Since the Samurai were mounted on horseback, their early swords were roughly five feet long with a four foot cutting edge. The straight edge sword, made for stabbing motions, was replaced with the more effective curved blade. This was the birth of Katana. Eventually the sword became the primary weapon of the Samurai.
