In Japanese folklore there was once a kind old man, and a cruel old woman. The old man kept a pet sparrow. One day the old woman became angry at the sparrow, cut out its tongue and let it loose. Grief stricken, the old man looked for the sparrow.

When he found the sparrow, the sparrow offered to feast the old man and offered him lodging. When the old man left the sparrow offered him his choice of two wicker baskets. The old man choose the lighter of the two. Upon arriving home he opened the basket to find it full of gold.

The old woman, consumed by greed, went to find the sparrow and demand the same gift. The sparrow gave the old woman her choice of wicker baskets. The old woman's greed over took her and she choose the heavier basket. Upon returning home she opened the basket to reveal goblins which attacked her.
