The sword of the Vikings was the Spatha. Both the Romans and the Barbarians wielded the sword. After the fall of the Roman Empire the Spatha was still one of the most widely used swords in Europe. The sword eventually became the sword of the Vikings, although it is a mistake to assume that the sword was only used by the Vikings. The Vikings took the Spatha and made it longer with a more distal taper and point. At the end of the Viking period the Spatha had evolved into the Arming Sword of European knights.
