Description Item Specs

Our Matsu katana is a light, fast, powerful cutter that proves itself time and time again, not unlike the hearty, strong trees growing on the rocky bluffs that grace many fantastic works of art throughout history. The wakizashi, bearing the same motif, is just as impressive as its larger counterpart. As this small blade shares both theme and ability with the larger version, we have chosen to call it the Bonsai.

The bonsai trees are designed to perfectly recreate beautiful plants found throughout nature, only on a much smaller scale. The twisted, gnarled trunks of ancient giants are re-created in a small package, likewise the delicate branches of the cascading cliff trees set up high in their miniature pots. Our Bonsai takes everything that makes the Matsu great, then shrinks it down into a nice, clean, fast wakizashi that would fit well at anyones side.
  • Blade: The blade of the Wakizashi has been constructed from T10 carbon steel. The hamon has been authentically created and features a Gunome design with a prominent Nie line. The Kissaki is a Chu-Kissaki design with a Midare-komi turn back.
  • The blade comes full tang and very sharp.
  • Saya: The Saya features a glossy black lacquered finish and bull horn Koiguchi. The Sageo is black chemical fiber.
  • Tsuka: The Tsuba is blackened steel in a cut out sukashi design of a tree. The Tsuka features one smoked bamboo Mekugi. The Ito is black chemical fiber. The samegawa (ray skin) is white with large emperor nodes. The Fuchikashira are antiqued steel with a simple, plain theme.

Outstanding May 25, 2016
Reviewer: John Persico from New Britain, CT United States
The pictures don't do this blade justice.  Honestly, after previous purchases from other vendors on the internet I've been slightly discouraged from a swords 'description,' for example the authentically created hamon.

Back to the sword.  It has a bull-horn Koiguchi wich is down right unheard of in this price range.  The hamon is beautiful and it didn't polish out after hand sharpening/polishing the blade (it was already near mirror finish).  The blade must definitely be true t-10 tungsten steel.  It was very difficult to sharpen so it will stand the tests of a novice.  The fit and fittings feel solid and real steel/brass.  Beautiful authentic ray-skin as specified.  The Ito is tightly wrapped with perfectly consistent diamonds.  Even the tsuba is more attractive in person, which was honestly one of the parts I was not expecting to adore.

I've been following japanese style swords for years and this has hands down impressed me even more so for the attractive price.

Solid/attractive/good feel May 25, 2016

Solid as a rock. Fit and finish perfect. High quality. Couldn't be better really. Thought the Tsuka would be a little too small cause I am a big guy but it actually is just right.

As close to a Nihonto as you're going to get May 25, 2016
Reviewer: Josh McNeal from United States
I have owned a Hanwei Practical Plus wakizashi, and it felt like a toy.  The Bonsai feels like a weapon.  The sword feels like a sword should, it sits solidly in the hand, but moves with a thought.  The saya is thick and heavy with a rounded kojiri.  The tsuba is well-executed.  The tsuka curves with the nakago.  The hamon is the most lively wakizashi hamon I have EVER seen.  It reminds me of a stormy ocean and sharp mountain ranges.  This is a real wakizashi.  I would trust my life to it.

Nice DH T10 wak in the price category May 25, 2016
Reviewer: LQL from Cheyenne, WY United States
The blade is differentially clay hardened, paper cut test passed, no problems on plastic water bottle.  Fittings tight, saya nice glossy and fits perfectly.  Only shortcoming was it came in a cardboard box, keeps the cost down.  Now SwordNArmory just needs a T10 DH katana and ninja in around this price range to go up against Musashi.  Would like to see some with more custom fittings like leather/suede wrap.

above expectations August 25, 2011
Reviewer: Tom Schneider from Worms, Rheinland-Pfalz Germany
The bonsai wakizashi exceeded my expectations. The blade is flawless and heavy with a visible amount of niku on it.

Cutting performance was really nice and I can recommend the bonsai as an excellent cutting wakizashi.

Best regards,
