A Damascus blade is one of the most easily recognizable blades in the world. The signature trait of the steel is the watermark or grain pattern with swirls. Damascus steel was first created in the Middle East around 900 AD, however, by 1750 AD the technique was completely lost. According to some accounts (though probably exaggerated) Damascus blades were able to cut through lesser swords and even rock. In modern times the term Damascus has come to mean any metal with a grain pattern. Ours is forge-folded.

Features

Blade: The blade of the sword has been constructed by forge folding, creating a look similar to the lost Damascus Steel folding technique. By hand the sword smith painstakingly stacks and forges individual layers of steel. This technique can be easily seen by the unique patterning of the steel on the blade. Traditionally this wood like grain pattern is known as the "water mark". This blade has a subtle grain.
This sword features 1,200 layers of Damascus-look Carbon Steel.
The curve of the blade has been created as a result of the forginf and quenching process. When the blade is quenched the sword is covered with a clay solution, except for the edge of the blade. The blade is then heated and quenched in water.
Since the Ha cools much more quickly than the rest of the blade the molecules in the steel expand and force the softer steel to fold back. This is the process that creates the Katana's trade mark Hamon.
The blade comes full tang and razor sharp.
Saya: The saya of the sword is wood with a high gloss black finish. A black synthetic silk Sageo has been wrapped around the wooden Kurigata. The Koiguchi has been hardened via laquering.
Tsuba: The Habaki of the sword is a one piece brass construction. Two brass seppas secure the blade of the sword into the Tsuba. The Tsuba is Musashi's sukashi Two cucumbers (double ring) design, made with blackened copper. Gold plaited dragons have been added to the Tsuba.
Tsuka: The Fuchi of the sword is blackened copper with a gold plated dragon. The Tsuka core is wooden with authentic Same (ray skin) wrap and black synthetic silk Ito. Two bamboo Mekugi secure the tang of the blade into the Tsuka. A silver plated dragon Menuki is found on each side of the Tsuka. The Kashira is blackened copper with another gold plated dragon.
