This is the CAS Hanwei Practical Plus Japanese Katana Sword. The blade is forged and differentially hardened in the traditional claying method with a prominent hamon. The HRC of the blade is 60 on the cutting edge and 40 on the back. The handsome Tsuba is of an iron “sunburst” design with a brass habaki.

Attributes of the Katana:
Blade: The blade is forged and differentially hardened in the traditional claying method with a prominent hamon. The HRC of the blade is 60 on the cutting edge and 40 on the back.
Saya: The Saya has been constructed from hard wood and finished in a deep black lacquer with a black Japanese cotton sageo.
Tsuba: The fittings of the Practical Plus are decorated in a Japanese Dogwood motif with dragon menuki, and the handsome Tsuba is of an iron “sunburst” design with a brass habaki.
Tsuka: The Tsuka core is comprised of two pieces of hardwood carved to tightly fit onto the tang. Channels are carved into the sides of to facilitate two panels of ray skin. The entire handle is wrapped with high quality woven cotton while small paper triangles are used to help shape the wrap correctly. The Practical Plus features genuine Same (Rayskin) on the Tsuka, with a wrap (Tsuka-Ito) specially developed for its gripping qualities. The long tang is double-pegged for security.

I got this sword from my Sensei. This is a very good Katana that is light and well balanced. The Tsuba (guard) is thicker and bigger than typical Tsuba (isn't problem). I don't think the gold Menuki (ornaments) are dragons they're shi-shi which is a nice change from what most swords have. The Kashira (handle endcap) and Fuchi (handle collar) have a dogwood motif. The Kashira has a set of gold Shitodome (eyelets) which accent the Menuki, Seppa (spacers) and Habaki (blade collar) nicely. The white Same (rayskin) is of good quality, the Ito (handle wrapping) tightly wrapped black imitation leather. Saya (scabbard) is a black textured lacquer that doesn't show dings easily. The Koiguchi (mouth of the scabbard), Kurigata (belt knob), and Kojiri (end of scabbard) are horn. The Sageo (scabbard cord) is made of cotton and is kinda short and thin which is ok as it doesn't really mess with the function of the sword. The blade has a nice curve and from what I've seen so far cuts pretty good.
