The Shishi, or lion dogs, are spiritual beings known as protectors of people and places of importance. They, along with the two Great Kings “Agyo” and “Ungyo”, are used as the protection for many Shinto shrines, Buddhist temples, and castles all throughout Japan. Their statues stand guard over the entrances to keep all malevolent spirits at bay.

According to legend, the powerful Lion Dogs would ritualistically throw their cubs over the side of a cliff to test their strength. Through this test, only the most powerful Shishi would remain, and they would never fail their masters.

We have fully customized the Aki Tora. The tang was cut down for one handed use and a custom tsuka carved. The Saya was given a natural wood finish with a clear lacquer coat. A black painted kojiri has been added to the saya. The Tsuka features a fully customized tsukamaki. The ito is black Hanwei imitation suede in a katatemaki style. The blade of the sword is T10 and fully functional.

Features

Blade: The blade of the sword has been constructed from T10 Steel in mono steel. It has been differentially hardened by packing a clay solution on the spine, being heated and finally quenched in spring water. The combination of the quenching and the clay cover creates a significant temperature difference in the Ha and the rest of the sword. The hamon is authentic and runs all the way from the tip of the Kissaki to the Hamachi.
The Hamon is a Gunome style. The sword comes full tang and razor sharp.
Saya: The Saya of the Wakizashi has been fully customized and features a natural wood finish with a clear lacquer coat and a painted black kojiri. The Koiguchi is bull horn, and the Kurigata is wooden with a black finish and chemical fiber sageo.
Tsuka: The Tsuba is a kiku hamidashi tsuba in steel and the Fuchigashira are alloy with a beaded antique finish. The tang has been cut down and a custom tsuka has been carved to fit the new tang. The samegawa was lacquered black and the tsuka channeled to fit the samegawa. The Ito is Hanwei imitation suede in a Katatemaki wrap. The Menuki are Lion dogs and the Mekugi is a single pin design of smoked bamboo.
