This is a replica of the Type 98 Katana carried by the Imperial Japanese Army during World War II. Before World War II all of the swords carried by the Imperial Japanese Army were equipped with two carrying rings. On the advise of a renown swords man of Japan the swords were given one ring. This allowed the sword to be carried much more easily and drawn more effectively. The Type 98 sword was one of the only swords used in combat during World War II.

The sword includes a Sword Bag.

Features

Attributes of the Weapon:
Blade: The blade has been handmade with high carbon steel, hammered out so that the carbon is evenly distributed throughout the blade for a consistent hardness. A bloodline has been added to the top of the blade to decrease the weight of the blade. The blade also features an o-kissake and comes with a thin edge already sharpened. This sword is full tang.
Saya: The scabbard is hard wood with a dark olive green high gloss finish and a steel Koi-Guchi (scabbard throat). The pommel is a cut out design with Ume blossoms in antiqued steel. A steel fitting has replaced the sage-o of the traditional katana. Consistent with World War II katanas there is only a single carrying ring made of steel.
Tsuba: The habaki is a two piece antiqued brass construction. The Tsuba is an almost exact replica of the Type 98 Officers sword used in World War II. There are four Ume blossoms on each corner of the guard, the beloved flower of Japan. The guard has been given an antique finish.
Tsuka: The Fuchi is decorated with more ume blossoms in relief. The Tsuka is constructed of hard wood over the tang of the blade with a tan cotton wrap and an imitation ray skin same. One bamboo mekugi secures the tang to the Tsuka. A golden menuki is found on each side of the handle. The Kashira is cut to match the pommel with an eye hole cut out and steel ring.

First off, I am keeping the sword. Now, the finish on the Saya, looks like finger prints in the finish. Drawing the blade. Very tight. Both hands needed. Blade appears to have rust spot. Habaki - very loose. Tsuba - Very loose as well. Ring on Kashira - looks and feels like scrap metal. Only pivots about 45 degrees. I only purchase Musashi brand katanas, so was a little disappointed with the overall quality. For the price, I will keep it. Though have paid less for better quality. Maybe just got the rare bad one.
