The saber first made an appearance in Europe during the 10th century with the arrival of the Hungarians. It is unclear where the saber originated but it has been proposed that it was the evolution of either the European falchion or the Central Asian scimitar. By the Napoleonic Wars the saber was in wide spread use. Napoleon would often use heavy cavalry charges to route his enemies. the saber continued to be used by cavalry until World War I. In the modern world the Saber is used primarily for ceremonial purposes.
