Item Specs

Mekugi are important parts of the Japanese sword. They hold the handle in place and act as a locking mechanism. Traditionally, swords only needed one mekugi. Most modern swords, however, require two.

Our Mekugi are made of bamboo and cured as they have been for hundreds of years. This strengthens the bamboo and makes it less prone to failure.

I just purchased my first Katana sword. After doing some research I came across the fact that these swords can be dismantled by removing these pegs. The article also indicated what qualities the replacement pegs should have, and these seem to meet the requirments. Shipping was very fast.

I purchased mekugi two seperate times, and the first time I was pleased when I received what I could tell were dried, smoked, very dense bamboo mekugi. The most recent ones I received were definitely not dried or smoked. They had the appearance of fresh cut bamboo with a bit of moisture still in the fibres. (Green) and they didn't appear as dense as they should be.
