Medieval Clothing: Gambenson and Brigandine

If you’ve invested in a collection of medieval weaponry in order to honor the traditions set in place centuries ago, it’s only natural to start desiring armor that’s authentic to the period. At Sword N Armory, you can find handcrafted pieces of armor apparel that will enhance your collection. Traditionally, two pieces of armory are essential: the gambeson and the brigandine. Both of these items have fascinating histories which are certainly worth exploring, especially if you’re a weaponry enthusiast with a unique interest in the medieval period.

The History of the Gambeson

The gambeson first appeared sometime around the 11th century and was used by warriors who needed protection from swords and arrows. The gambeson is a quilted jacket that’s heavily insulated in order to protect the wearer from a variety of blades. Historically, it was commonly stuffed with horsehair or some other sort of thick animal material in order to provide adequate protection.

A gambeson was frequently used as the sole piece of armor, especially during the 11th and 12th centuries. At the time, weaponry was not advanced enough to require further protection. The gambeson was also used as a heavy jacket for warriors during the cold months due to its unusually powerful ability to insulate the body against harsh winds and cold air.

Typically, gambesons were made from cotton or wool. It’s highly likely that these apparel items were the first to utilize the quilting technique. This technique allowed the gambeson to be properly padded inside.

Sometimes, gambesons were worn beneath metal-plated armor as an additional piece of protective gear.

The History of the Brigandine

Brigandines started appearing in Europe sometime around the 12th century, and they were possibly the first form of protective apparel to feature the integration of metal materials. Typically, a brigandine was constructed from heavy cloth material, leather or canvas. Small, oval-shaped steel plates were sewn into the material to serve as protection against various weapons.

One thing that distinguishes the brigandine from several other types of protective gear is that it’s sleeveless. That’s because it was commonly worn above another piece of armor. Additionally, brigandines are uniquely flexible due to the construction and the placement of the metal pieces. This was important as it allowed warriors to move the upper half of their bodies easily during combat.

Brigandines were often worn above gambesons, meaning that the wearer was extremely insulated due to the thick nature of these materials. Sometimes, the metal plates were sewn between two layers of the material, while other designs consisted of a single layer of material with the plates sewn on top.

According to historical references, brigandines were the armor of choice until sometime during the mid-1600s.
